A glimpse into the future. Pinterest Predicts 2022

What’s going to be most popular in 2022, what will surprise, and what is there to look forward to in 2022? The “trends that aren't trending yet” according to Pinterest Predicts

There's something for every sector: home, celebrations, pets, hobbies and interests, well-being, food and drink, fashion, beauty, travel... complete with a focus on age groups, from boomers to Gen X and Gen Z via millennials.

For the coming year, Pinterest even offers its outlook on the home trends that reveal the sociological and psychological implications of this unprecedented time, not to mention emphasising the emotional side of approaching one's home: “If you need a place to go to feel all the feels, there's a room for that” with great (indoor) escapes and designated rooms for expressing the full emotional spectrum.

And actually, the search data found are worth reflecting on: “rage room” is up 150%, home massage room is up 190%, music-themed rooms have doubled  from last year and tiny library room increased 12-fold.

Searches for biophilic architecture are interesting and rightfully booming, up 150%, as is biophilic design bedroom (+100%). “You've seen house plants. Now meet living rooms.” The report highlights millennials' interest in “plant-first design solutions... to increase their connection to nature and enhance their well-being.”

Since we are getting used to doing more and more activities from home, ideas for transforming rooms, such as laundry rooms, basements or garages, into rooms devoted to play or work are growing exponentially. “In 2022, people will give luxurious makeovers to their home’s nooks and crannies. For millennials and Gen X, forgotten spaces will become conversation starters when you have guests over.”

Style note: “curve's the word... Boomers, Gen X and millennials are driving searches behind this well-rounded home trend.” In 2022, curved-shaped furnishings are expected, with demand for rounded sofas and curved kitchen islands tripling. Alongside these, the aesthetic codes of antiquity will assert themselves, with inspiration taken from ancient Greece, particularly for Gen Z (Aphrodite aesthetic wallpaper +180).

As always, there's a focus on celebrating: “In 2022, millennials, Gen X and boomers will embrace celebrations that mark fresh milestones and open new chapters.” (Divorce party ideas +55%, adopt a pet birthday party ideas +85%...)

Increasingly special spaces dedicated to pets whose owners, millennials, boomers and Gen X are increasingly inclined to revolutionise their homes to create luxury spaces and special spots dedicated to cats and dogs.

A growing focus on personal interests means that "this year, Gen X-ers and boomers will be into playful pastimes such as indoor swings, useful crafts and fairy bedroom ideas” with useful crafts for adults doubling in interest, indoor swings tripling and fairy bedroom ideas increasing 9-fold.

Also on the rise are moments spent together, where “afternoon tea is the new happy hour” with its aesthetics and poses. So make way for high tea food ideas, with a 70% increase in vintage tea party.

Last but not least, reflections on retail point out that “as more people start their own bricks-and-mortar and online shops this year, they’ll turn to Pinterest to plan their layouts, shopfronts and signage. Millennials, Gen X and boomers are driving this entrepreneurial design trend.” A high degree of creativity is expected for in-store displays, window displays and signage.
